Chapter 32

Estranged

Perhaps had our maternal relatives played a greater role during our childhood, my siblings and I might’ve embraced them rather than becoming estranged, but since our mom didn’t follow Jewish tradition and married interracially, she was ostracized by prejudiced family members. However, it wasn’t until after some of their deaths that I learned of their lives during eulogies. Similarly, it wasn’t until recently that I was introduced to several of my White cousins, but because we are so different culturally, it’s doubtful we will develop close relationships at this point.
