Chapter 26

The Color of Corporate

For years, while working in the construction trades, I let my beard and afro grow out, which coincided appropriately with my Harley-Davidson motorcycle image. However, that image was not going to fly in the 1990s corporate world. In fact, few if any of the corporate positions I obtained would have been offered to me had it been known I was part African American. My acceptance by colleagues would have been questionable as well, as a number of them were quite racist. As a result of my appearing similar to my coworkers, I was generally accepted by them. While I didn’t stand on a rock and wave an African American flag, I didn’t wave a White flag either. I just let my White appearance speak for itself. Nevertheless, I always felt there was a glass ceiling in the corporate world that I was unable to traverse. How much of that was race-related is difficult to tell.
